Train like a Warrior*
Sweat Magazine, January 2000
By Joan Kay Westlake

Realistic warrior training is the basis of Richard Ryan's Defense Systems. From the Four Corners region to Yuma, you'd be hard pressed to find a law enforcement officer who has not taken one of Ryan's seminars or private courses. Students fly in from around the world to his north Phoenix facility for personal instruction. He is a third generation law enforcement instructor with more than 25 years of martial arts training as well as personal bodyguard and military experience.

His Dynamic Combat program is a personal survival system that addresses all aspects of violent confrontations from verbal through weapons, defense. Although not for children, Ryan said his training is personalized to accommodate the physical levels of people from 16 to 65. He added that his self-defense Smart Moves seminars are often a stepping stone for people who decide that they want to devote time and effort in a comprehensive defense program.

Ryan said that for most students, the warrior training becomes a key motivator to get in better physical shape. It is a fitness goal that becomes a way of life.
